Going back to university 大学 at 46 has been fantastic. I am at Edith Cowan University (ECU) again. ECU is an excellent university. This is the third time for me at ECU. I did my BA in Psychology, my Grad Dip in Education and now for a Diploma in Languages. Let me tell you it rocks and I love it. What I love about ECU is that it always strives for excellent since it moved over from a college to a university. We were the underdog against the big wigs of University of WA, Murdoch University and Curtin University. ECU is innovative and offers so much for students. I am loving it.
I have always loved school. I loved primary school, I loved high school and I loved uni. I have not loved school for the reasons you might think. I love the atmosphere of school. I don’t love the boring learning of some units or subjects like Principles of Professional Practice (arrrrrrah). For me it’s all about the diversity and there is always something new and exciting going on. I suppose it’s why I have ended up being a teacher せんさい.
School 学校 has always represented to me a place of fun and socialisation (and I do love socialising). Learning has never been easy for me and I have struggled through education and learning for as long as I can remember. In year 1 they wanted to keep me down but Mum fought hard for me to go to year 2 and I did summer lessons that year to catch up. I never felt like I did. My grammar, spelling and English skills have always been shocking and although I was average at other subjects (due to working hard) I could not get my head around English. In fact in year 12 when I applied for university the first time I failed English and my TEE said illiterate. Obviously I didn’t make it to uni that time.
Due to studying having always been hard work for me, previously at university I was always a bit jealous of others not having to work as hard as I did but then again half of those people dropped out or it took them 5 years to complete their degrees. My friends in high school made fun of my writing and English and I find it so ironic that now I am a teacher and doing a Diploma in Languages. I can’t spell in English let alone spell in another language!! But you know what ….. who cares about that. I never have and it proves to me you can do anything you really want to. Don’t be daunted by what you can’t do because there is always stuff you can’t do but if you have got a big old thing called determination and guts that’s what you use to learn, to be or to live the life you want. Use that when you don’t have “natural talents”.
If you are thinking of going back to university 大学, starting to study or know someone that is thinking about it. Share this and give them some others inspiration they can do it!! Because if I can you can.
